Venezuelan artist Silvana Trevale brings the coastal colours of home into her ongoing series

“In a continuous search for a home away from Venezuela, my photos tie my childhood with the present day,” says Silvana Trevale by way of introducing her practice. “Living in Europe, I have explored my memories through colour, skin and light, and by casting people who resemble my childhood friends.”
The London and Barcelona-based photographer blurs the line between fashion and documentary, and between the Global North and South, through her tender and optimistic lens. Her portraits seek to centre her Latin American heritage and the community she finds on both sides of the Atlantic. While clients include Vogue and Atmos, Loewe and Adidas, it’s often her personal projects that do the work of hailing Venezuelan culture and humanity that is so close to her heart.
Trevale’s new story ‘Bol’ is part of her ongoing ‘Rio Chico’ series inspired by a youth spent by the sea. “This is a homage to my days in Rio Chico, a beach town where I spent my childhood,” she adds. “Exploring colour is a way for me to connect with the vivid environment I grew up in. The colours in people’s clothing are accentuated by the harsh sun, the bright blue of the sky, and the deep blue of the sea. By experimenting with these saturated tones, I’m working to showcase how they resonate with my memories.”
