Taking Brooklyn by storm with New African Photography

Studio Nataal’s partnership with Jimmy Moffat’s Red Hook Labs saw us curate a major photographic exhibition for three consecutive years during Frieze Week NYC. Each group show presented our pick of emerging artists for a 10-day show, launch party attended by 2,000+ tastemakers and print sales.

On the opening day we hosted two VIP talks followed by an evening launch party, which saw over 1,000 invited guests enjoy the works of our six selected artists - Atong AtemDelphine Diaw DialloKristin-Lee MoolmanLakin Ogunbanwo, Namsa Leuba and Owise Abuzaid. Music on the night came courtesy of Everyday People’s DJ Moma and Saada Ahmed plus a live performance by local duo butterflyTree.

The show has since garnered favourable reviews in the press including Document Journal, Vice, Dazed, Okayafrica, Guardian, US Vogue, Design Indaba, Models.com and The Creator’s Project. Vogue Italia called it “a journey into the rich visual culture of contemporary Africa… a must see exhibition.” i-D described the line-up as “the new generation of talent changing the face of African photography.” While The New Yorker commented that “the beauty of the show lies as much in the contrasts as in the few overlaps. It’s photography of Africa… but of the photographers’ own imagined worlds, too.”

Having been on view for 10 days, the exhibition rounded up on 15 May. For inquiries regarding print sales visit Red Hook Labs. And watch this space for an announcement of Nataal's next event.
